Professional Certificates & Qualifications

AS/NZS2980:2018 Trade Welding Certificate

Details

In March 2018, AS/NZS 2980:2018 was released with some major changes.
Firstly, the new standard now requires welders to make more than one test piece should they require an all position qualification range. In addition, fillet welds require a separate test piece as well, unless a certain joint prep is used for a butt weld.
The length of the test piece has been reduced from 300mm down to 200mm; however we elect to use 250mm length plates to enable a macro test, prior to radiographic testing.
Validation is no longer required every two years, as a successful candidate will now earn a three year certification, with the option of revalidation every two years upon volumetric testing (ultrasonic or radiographic) of a similar joint on a production piece.

Confirmation & Revalidation

AS/NZS 2980.2018 Certification is valid for up to 3 years’ subject to 6 monthly confirmations by a responsible person (employer / welding coordinator / examiner or examining body). This means the welder is observed welding as per the welding procedure given on the welder test data sheet. At the end of the 3 year period certification must be re-validated by an Approved Examiner (Welding Academy).

Why is it Revalidated

The reason for the 6 month re-validation is to ensure the welder is regularly welding to that procedure during their regular employment.

What is a PQR and a WPS?

  Sparks

Procedure Qualification Record (PQR)

A Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) is the record of the actual weld test parameters used.It is the founding document as far as procedures are concerned and is used to produce welding procedure specification sheets (WPS) for production welds. It is company dependent and never expires.

Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)

A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is the formal written document describing welding procedures, which provides direction to the welder or welding operators for making sound and quality production welds as per the code requirements. The WPS is also used for submittal to clients, engineers or inspectors.

A WPS is based on the allowable variables of the approved PQR and is required for allproduction welds. Any number od these can be written from a single PQR without further testing as long as they comply. As with any document the procedures can only work if they are used correctly in accordance with the parameters detailed.

As per the PQR the WPS is company dependent and never expires. A WPS is a legal copyrighted document which is supported by a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR).
