As a student at the Welding Academy, she’s overcoming challenges, mastering new skills, and proving that determination and passion can shatter stereotypes. Ataahua reveals “I wanted to gain a base skillset that I could develop into a practical career I’d love. Welding was always something I considered, but I only seriously began to pursue it over the past couple of years. Initially, I doubted my potential and ability, I can be my own worst enemy. However, through perseverance and having faith in myself and my tutors, I realized what I was capable of once I truly committed. As a woman entering a traditionally male-dominated field, my experience has been incredibly positive. I was welcomed with open arms and always felt supported, never being made to feel lesser for asking questions or learning at my own pace.”
“Being part of a growing number of women in welding means refusing to limit myself based on others’ opinions or preconceived notions about my abilities. My presence in the industry shows that there’s no excuse not to give it a shot, working in a male-dominated field might seem daunting, but taking that step to change things for yourself always leads to growth. Earning my certifications in Level 4 Structural Welding has been incredibly empowering, boosting my confidence both professionally and personally. I’m excited to keep growing and achieving even more.”
“I decided to join the Welding Academy after seeing an intake ad. I’d been unsure about my next step, so I finally decided to go for it—and I’m so glad I did! My experience has been excellent, with a fantastic group of people to train alongside and incredibly supportive tutors. The environment is particularly welcoming for women because there’s no discrimination—everyone is there to learn and focus on developing their skills, making it all about progress rather than labels. The most impactful lessons for me have been learning to manually set up machines, prep materials, work with different gas types, and apply various welding positions and methods. These skills have been transformative in my development.”
“Perfecting my arc welding methods and earning my arc welding ticket have been standout milestones in my welding journey. I’m especially proud of mastering my uphill weave and overhead arc welding processes, which took dedication and practice to perfect. These skills have been a significant source of pride and accomplishment for me.”
“My ultimate goal is to run my own shop or work in the field, and my next step is to get into something structured to build toward that dream. I’m particularly excited about specializing in field repairs, agricultural work, or structural welding. For women considering a career in welding but feeling unsure, my advice is simple: if you enjoy creating, engaging your brain, and working with your hands, go for it! Even if it doesn’t work out exactly as planned, the experience you gain will be invaluable.
As a transwoman, I’ve faced quick judgments from others, but I take pride in my work and always aim to lift up those around me. Representation matters, and I hope to inspire others by showing that perseverance and dedication can break barriers. The industry is evolving to become more inclusive, and I’m proud to play a role in that change by advocating for diversity and encouraging others to pursue their passion.”
