The welding industry is seeing a growing number of women enter and excel in what has traditionally been a male-dominated field. Sohraya, a recent graduate of the Welding Academy’s Level 3 and Level 4 programs, is one of these trailblazers. Her story highlights the importance of support, resilience, and determination in pursuing a career in welding.
Sohraya reveals “I was keen to pursue a career in the trades and was recommended to give welding a go. Although it wasn’t something I always envisioned myself doing, learning more about it sparked my interest and made me eager to try it.
Entering a male-dominated field without any prior experience in trades was initially a challenge, but the supportive course environment and people made the transition smooth and manageable.”
“My experience as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field has been great. While it requires having thick skin and letting some things go, I’ve faced little to no issues. The biggest challenge has been getting started and familiarising myself with the trade, but now that I’m nearly finished with the course, my focus is on finding a job in the industry. The Welding Academy has been incredibly supportive, understanding that everyone starts at different levels and providing the guidance needed to help me navigate those challenges.”
“I decided to join the Welding Academy after hearing great things about it and feeling it was the best option compared to other places. My experience has been fantastic, I’ve progressed significantly in my skills and met some amazing people along the way. The support from my tutor and fellow students creates an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of gender, is given equal opportunities to succeed. The most impactful part of my journey has been gaining a deeper understanding of the trade and learning how to handle challenges effectively.”
“A key milestone in my welding journey has been becoming comfortable with all the tools and equipment, and achieving a level of self-sufficiency that I’m proud of. Mastering the basics and building confidence with the tools and machinery have been significant accomplishments, giving me a strong foundation to continue growing in the trade.”
“My future goal in welding is to continue building on my skills and become qualified in various welding techniques. For women considering welding, my advice is simple: give it a go. You’ll never know unless you try, and the effort is always worth it. The industry is becoming more open to women, and I’m proud to contribute to that progress by becoming another qualified woman in welding and inspiring others to join the field.”
“Being part of the growing number of women in welding is exciting, but it doesn’t make me feel different from anyone else, we’re all here to learn and grow. Coming from a family with no trade background and forging my own path has shown others that it’s possible to take this route, even without prior exposure. Welding has been incredibly empowering, boosting my confidence and proving to me that I’m capable of stepping out of my comfort zone and succeeding.”
Sohraya’s story showcases how determination, a supportive environment, and the willingness to take a chance can lead to a fulfilling career in welding.
