Course Overview

The Level 3 & 4 programmes are aimed for people intending to become professional welders. Successful candidates will learn a variety of welding skills and techniques recognized in the welding industry.


The programme is highly practical with lots of opportunities to demonstrate new skills and knowledge using the latest welding equipment and technology.


The Level 3 is considered a pre-trade course and the Level 4 course then takes you up to coded welder standard.

Domestic Fees-Free government scheme

Are you eligible? Tertiary education is fees-free for eligible domestic tertiary students, including those who have previously undertaken less than 60 credits of study. Course Outline

Graduates of the Level 3 qualification will be able to:

  • Identify and apply knowledge obtained from a variety of specialised sources relevant to their chosen field.
  • Manage own learning and work effectively as an individual and as a team member to achieve relevant goals.
  • Solve problems and communicate clearly using a range of appropriate media.
  • Evaluate opportunities and develop plans for study and career pathways relevant to their chosen field.

 

Graduates of the Level 4 qualification will be able to:

  • Locate, select and analyse relevant information from a variety of sources and apply it to context-relevant tasks and problems
  • Work independently and collaboratively on context-relevant academic tasks and problems
  • Construct a reasoned and researched argument, communicated using a range of appropriate media
  • Develop and critique a study and career plan that identifies specific long-term career goals.

 

What you will Learn

  • We will provide training leading to qualifications in each of the main processes of welding: Mig, Arc, Tig, Aluminium and Gas Cutting in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium.
  • Safe use of engineering machinery and tools.
  • Workshop Health and Safety Procedures.
  • Gain a well balanced theoretical knowledge of welding, including creating and interpreting drawings and plans.
  • We will work with students through the interview process, writing CVs and portfolios giving you the confidence required to gain employment in the engineering industry.

Around 98% of last year’s students have gained employment in the welding industry around New Zealand.

Qualification

You will gain the:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 3) and
  • New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 4)

 

These are both Unit Standard based NZQA approved qualifications.

    • Workshop Supervisor.
    • Welding Inspector.
    • Welding Supervisor.
    • Welding engineer.
    • Manufacturing engineer.
    • Mechanical Engineer.
    • Engineering Contractor.

Career Opportunities

  • Welding is used in:
    • Automotive i.e. Towbars (Mig, Arc and Tig).
    • Agricultural equipment i.e. Dairy – Silos, irrigation systems, installation. (Mig, Tig and Arc).
    • Construction i.e. earthquake strengthening and construction of modern high rise building (Mig and Arc).
    • Oil and Gas Industry – i.e. pipes or working in refineries (Mig, Arc and Tig).
    • Kitchen manufacturing Industry i.e. manufacturing stainless steel kitchenware (Tig).
    • Aviation Industry ie Tig welding (Tig).
    • Marine ie underwater welding and boat building and repairs (Mig, Arc and Tig).
    • Gas Cutting ie metal recycling.
    • Manufacturing in general.

Admission Information

Application Criteria (Domestic Students):

  • No previous welding experience needed.
  • Applicants should have sufficient physical stamina to be able to weld for several hours per day.
  • Applicants must be able to perform the mechanical tasks required to complete the course unit standards.
  • All applicants must prove their legal status to allow them study in New Zealand.

Application Criteria (Domestic Students):

  • Domestic Students must be 16 years of age or over before the start the course.
  • Domestic students must have NCEA level 1
  • Applicants must be fit and able to carry out the physical requirements of the welding industry.
  • Applicants should have a desire to pathway onto further study or start a career.
  • Students must have successfully completed the Level 3 course before starting the Level 4 course.

 

Domestic student level 3 & 4  certificate courses are provided through the Welding Academy under contract to the National Trade Academy.
