Courses & Study

Domestic Students – Please click on a question below to get the answer

We have Two NZQA programmes:

New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 3) [Ref: 4605].

and

New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 4) [Ref: 4606].

Each programme is 60 credits. You must pass Level 3 before starting Level 4.

If you successfully pass you will gain:

  • For the Level 3 Course
    • New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 3)
  • For the Level 4 Course
    • New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 4)

These are both Unit Standard based NZQA approved qualifications and your results will appear on your NZQA Record of Learning.

Each level is 20 weeks. Classes run 4 hours a day, 5 days a week.

We have 2 sessions per day:

  • Morning Class – 8.00am to 12.00pm
  • Afternoon Class – 12.30pm to 4.30pm

We will do our best to accommodate your preferred time slot, subject to availability.

No, These programmes are full-time daytime classes only. There is no part-time or evening classes available.

Yes,

  • if you pass Level 3 at the January intake you can progress to the July Level 4 intake, subject to places.
  • if you pass Level 3 at the July intake you can progress to the January Level 4 intake, subject to places.

Yes, we have plenty of free parking outside the front of our building.

Entry Requirements for Domestic Students

  • No previous welding experience needed.
  • Domestic Students must be 16 years of age or older before the start the course.
  • Domestic students under age 25 must have NCEA level 1. (If you are over 25 you must prove numeracy and literacy ability)
  • Applicants should have a desire to pathway onto further study or start a career.
  • Students must have successfully completed the Level 3 course before starting the Level 4 course.
  • Applicants should have sufficient physical stamina to be able to weld for several hours per day.
  • Applicants must be able to perform the mechanical tasks required to complete the course unit standards.
  • All applicants must prove their legal status to allow them study in New Zealand (NZ Passport or Permanent Resident  Visa or Birth Cert (Not Driver Licence).

Application to Enrol

  1. Fill in the form on the “Contact” page
  2. We will email you an Enrolment pack 
  3. Read all the information thoroughly and complete Application to enrol form and the Medical form.
  4. Check that you have completed all parts of the form and included all required documentation e.g. copy of Passport or Birth Certificate – Not Driver Licence
  5. Email your Application to enrol form, Medical form and any additional information required eg copy of Passport back to us.

Next Steps

  1. Once we have processed your application, we will email you with our decision.
  2. If successful you will receive an email from the National Trade Academy (NTA) with a Letter of Acceptance form
  3. You need to sign the back page of that form and send it back to us to confirm your enrolment. 

 

Don’t Forget

  1. The Letter of Acceptance form will also contain an Invoice for the course fees, it is your responsibility to organise payment of the fees.
  2. Now is the time to apply to StudyLink if you require a student loan – Do not put this off as wait times can be very long.

No. Level 3 is designed for beginners with little or no experience. Level 4 then builds on Level 3 skills and knowledge.

Generally speaking if you have one of the following you are classed as a domestic student:

  • NZ Passport,
  • Permanent Resident Visa,
  • NZ Birth Certificate

 

You are domestic student if you have any of the following:

  • New Zealand citizenship (this includes New Zealand citizens born in the Cook Islands, Niue, or Tokelau, and New Zealand citizens by descent)
  • Australian Citizenship (only eligible for domestic fees only if residing in New Zealand for the period of your study)
  • New Zealand Residence Class Visa (only eligible for domestic fees only if residing in New Zealand for the period of your study)
  • Australian Permanent Residence (only eligible for domestic fees only if residing in New Zealand for the period of your study)

 

Please note: if you hold a New Zealand Residence Class Visa, or have Australian citizenship or Australian Permanent Residence but you are residing outside New Zealand while studying with us, you will be charged international fees.

We will ask you to come in to take a short Numeracy and Literacy test.

No, the Level 3 course must be successfully completed before starting Level 4.

We do not offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Yes we do take school leavers at age 16 years and you must have NCEA Level1 to enrol.

There is no upper age limit for students to enrol, so career-changers are welcome.

Places are limited on our courses, so apply early to avoid missing out.

We do operate a waitlist if you were not able to get in.

Welding is physical. The Medical form helps us keep you safe in the workshop (fumes, heat, standing, lifting). It is not a fitness test to exclude people without discussion. We also like to know if you have any learning issues that you may need help with, we want to know how we can help you learn to the best of your ability.

StudyLink and enrolment rules require proof of legal status to study in New Zealand. A driver licence does not prove citizenship or residence. So either an NZ Passport or NZ Birth Certificate or Passport with Permanent Residence Visa.

Domestic Level 3 and 4 certificate programmes are delivered by the Welding Academy under contract to
National Trade Academy(NTA).

The NTA is the registered provider you must select on StudyLink for your student loan application.

Due to Privacy Laws we cannot assist you with sourcing funding for your course.

We will send you an invoice for your course fees and it is your responsibility on how to pay, either by Student Loan, or self-funding.

No, the Government has announced Fees Free is no longer available.

The course Fees for 2027 are still to be confirmed by TEC:

  • Level 3 $4612.86 tbc.
  • Level 4 $4932.88 tbc.

 

Your fees include all course costs including all your books / work sheets / assessment guides, also your workshop course materials / consumables, plus one full set of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) which includes:

  • Welding Helmet (Auto Darkening)
  • Safety Glasses
  • Steel Cap Boots
  • Overalls
  • Gloves (1pr for Mig and 1pr for Tig)
  • Ear Plugs
  • Dust Masks

Your fees include all course costs including all your books / work sheets / assessment guides, also your workshop course materials / consumables, plus one full set of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) which includes:

No. Privacy rules mean we cannot source funding for you. We invoice the fees; you arrange payment by
student loan or self-funding.

You will receive an invoice from NTA which will have the payment date on. Generally fees are due within 21 days of invoice, at least 5 working days before the course start date.

No, you either organise a student loan through Studylink or pay by cash/Credit Card prior to the start date of the Programme.

Due to privacy laws, you must ask WINZ / MSD directly.

Refunds of fees and/or course costs are handled by the National Trade Academy (NTA)

Employment after study

An ever increasing number of medium and large engineering / manufacturing companies now require their welders to be qualified with the NZ Certificate in Welding Level 3 and Level 4. 

There is a shortage of trained skilled welders in New Zealand, so now has never been a better time to train to be a Qualified Welder. According to Tahatu – Careers Navigator you can expect to earn between $60K and up to $125K

  • Welding is used in:
    • Automotive i.e. Towbars (Mig, Arc and Tig).
    • Agricultural equipment i.e. Dairy – Silos, irrigation systems, installation. (Mig, Tig and Arc).
    • Construction i.e. earthquake strengthening and construction of modern high rise building (Mig and Arc).
    • Oil and Gas Industry – i.e. pipes or working in refineries (Mig, Arc and Tig).
    • Kitchen manufacturing Industry i.e. manufacturing stainless steel kitchenware (Tig).
    • Aviation Industry ie Tig welding (Tig).
    • Marine ie underwater welding and boat building and repairs (Mig, Arc and Tig).
    • Gas Cutting ie metal recycling.
    • Manufacturing in general.

Qualification Pathways

  • With the Level 4 qualification, you are a qualified welder and so are able to go out and get a job as a welder – no need to do an apprenticeship.
  • With further Work Experience and/or qualifications you may aspire to become one of the following:
    • Workshop Supervisor.
    • Welding Inspector.
    • Welding Supervisor.
    • Welding engineer.
    • Manufacturing engineer.
    • Mechanical Engineer.
    • Engineering Contractor.

Yes, in the Level 4 programme we can help with writing your CV’s/Resume and help you with Job hunting. 

We have close relationships with business around New Zealand and we often get calls from them looking for newly qualified welders.

We will try our best to help you secure a job after the course is completed, you will find our alumni working all over New Zealand and Internationally.

By successfully completing the Level 3 course you are classified as a “Supervised Welder”, meaning you can work as a welder but you must be supervised at all times.

By successfully completing the Level 4 course you are classified as a “Qualified Welder” and able to get a full-time job as a welder and earn much higher rates than a “Supervised Welder”.

The Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZCO) classifies a person with the Level 3 and Level 4 Certificate in Welding as:

  • ANZSCO 322313: Welder (New Zealand)
  • ANZSCO 322313: Welder (First Class) (Australia).
